I am very sure that almost everyone has heard of ‘The Wizard of OZ’ from their childhood. I remember a sweet innocent girl as Dorothy, A kind-hearted Lion, a wobbly Scarecrow, and a stiff Tin Man all going to see the wizard of oz and all telling tales of a truly wicked witch. Then, I did not think much of how these characters came to be or any history that there may be. The common thought then was always the Good vs Evil. Until I recently saw the play I never gave thought to anything else except for the journey and obstacles on the way to the Wizard of Oz. I recently saw the play ‘Wicked’ here in my hometown (Birmingham, AL). I can honestly say that I overly enjoyed the play from beginning to end. I felt that the characters were given more depth and a totally new perception. In this post I wanted to share 3 of my thoughts and opinions from the play Wicked that changed my perception of the Wizard of Oz and that intrigued me the most. Although the play, Wicked, was written after the book , The Wizard of Oz, the play gave a new feel to the book in modern-day times.
1) The Wicked Witch (Elphaba) was really a kind-hearted person and not as mean or wicked as I thought.
Thinking back, I always thought of the Wicked Witch as a cruel, ugly and mean witch who had no intentions but to bring harm and to conquer. Through the play I felt a connection to the witch who was really a kind-hearted person that tried to bring good to those around her.
2) The Scarecrow was in love with the Wicked Witch and did not question his intelligence at all.
In the Wizard of Oz I never would have guessed that the scarecrow would actually be in love with the Wicked Witch because the The Wizard of Oz portrayed him as only a scarecrow who wanted a brain. I don’t want to give the play away for those who have not seen it, but I will say that it brought a smile to my face at how the scarecrow and the wicked witch characters were developed in the play
3) The wizard was conniving and sneaky and not so kind at all.
True, the wizard was an ordinary man, but this is as far as the similarities go. I never would have thought of him being that underhanded…but then again he is human so the perception of the wizard in the play now seems about right as compared to the Wizard of Oz.
I think that if the Wicked had been written before the Wizard of Oz we would see a totally different mix. Since Wicked came after the fact it creates a bit of controversy on whose side of the story is best to believe. Me personally, I like the Witches version the best. I hope that you all have enjoyed my thoughts on this wonderful play. If you haven’t seen it yet I urge you to read the book and go and see the play while it is here in town. I overly enjoyed finally getting to see this play…and I loved sharing my thoughts and opinions with you
